Supper Club: Nesan Creations at Dhabha @49
It was my first Supper Club event and it could not have been better. Nesan Creations Supper Clubs has organised a couple of months ago a real treat for who wants to discover traditional recipes from all over the world. I went to Dhabha @49, a lovely Indian restaurant at 49 Chippenham Road, Maida Vale, W9 2AH in London for the " Journey through Royal Awadhi and Mughlai Indian Cuisine" event with Chef Priya Deshingkar of Deccan Tiffin, supported by Executuve Chef Arup Dasgupta. The food was a feast for the eyes and delicious.
We started with Mini Matar Kachori which is a kind of samosa but different shape and filling. The outer pastry is flaky and crispy and it is accompanied with a spicy sauce. I have enjoyed it while drinking a delicious salted Lassi.
Another beautifully presented dish was the Aloo Tokri Chaat, comprising of a little basket made of potatoes and filled with vegetables. It was delicious. These dishes were all originally from Northern India and this one is a typical street food ware. The filling can be anything you like and it is not difficult to make them at home.
Next came the Galawati Lamb Chops with Naan bread, cooked to perfection. Galawati means " Melt in your mouth" and in fact the lamb was incredibly tender and juicy. The Naan bread was soft and warm, exactly what I like.
In order to taste both meat and fish, a pipkin arrived at the table, full to brim with softly spicy king prawns, the Adraki Jhinga, where the prawn have been marinated in ginger and green chillies and then sauteed. I have never eaten prawns so tasty and delicately hot.
The dessert was something decadent. The Malpua with Rabri is a sugar syrup soaked pancake, with a topping of rich thickened milk. I swear, I've licked the plate clean. This gastronomic tour of Northern India organised by Nesan Thirunesan, the Supper Club King, has been a great opportunity to discover some fantastic dishes instead of the usual ones we order out of habit in an Indian restaurant. For sure I will look for them. Nesan Creations Supper Clubs explore not only the rich Indian heritage in food but also other countries. Stay tuned for more.
A last salty Lassi and then I was out reminiscing of a great lunch on a Sunday packed full of flavours and a fantastic atmosphere that we had during the meal. Also at these Supper Clubs there are always some musical entertainment from the country we are sampling the food, so we were treated to a couple of dances in pure Indian and Bollywood style. www.ncsupperclubs.com
